Charles Powell was for many years Private Secretary and Adviser on foreign affairs and defence to Lady Thatcher when she was Prime Minister, and held the same position in the early part of John Major’s time as Prime Minister. He is now an independent member of the House of Lords.
Since 1992 he has been an international businessman, serving as a Board member of several major international companies including Louis Vuitton Moet-Hennessy, Jardine Matheson, Caterpillar, Textron, Schindler, Northern Trust Corporation, Hong Kong Land and Mandarin Oriental Hotels, and on the Advisory Boards of Rolls-Royce, Barrick Gold and Chubb.
He is Chairman of the Trustees of the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, Deputy Chairman of the Fudan University Business School Advisory Board, Chairman of the British Museum Trust, a Trustee of the Aspen Institute and of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
He is Honorary Fellow of Somerville College Oxford, of King’s College London and of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
